Information
Casa Hamilton is an iconic abandoned building located on the north coast of Tenerife, near Los Realejos. Built in 1903, it was once a groundbreaking water pumping station designed to lift water from the Gordejuela springs up to banana plantations in the Orotava Valley.
Though no longer in use, the multi-level ruins perched dramatically on the cliffside are among the most spectacular abandoned sites on the island. The spot is perfect for watching a magical sunset, and the surrounding area offers a beach, waterfall, coastal paths, and lush vegetation.
The building is not accessible inside, but can be viewed safely from a cliff-top viewpoint.
History
Casa Hamilton was built in 1903 by the English company Hamilton to solve the challenge of transporting freshwater from the Gordejuela springs, located near the shoreline, up a 200-meter cliff to irrigate banana plantations inland.
At the time, it was one of the most advanced industrial facilities in the Canary Islands. The total construction cost was around 1 million Spanish pesetas, which also included installing Tenerife’s first steam engine.
The facility originally consisted of: a main building at the top of the cliff to house workers; additional service buildings and a warehouse; and a 43-meter-tall chimney, which has since collapsed.
The water lifted by the pumping station not only served agricultural purposes but also helped power a flour mill. Over time, the system became obsolete and the facility was abandoned.
Today, Casa Hamilton is surrounded by native flora, including palm trees, tabaibas, and dragon trees, and is featured in several scenic hiking routes.
