Information
This circular hike takes you through one of Tenerife’s most iconic volcanic landscapes. Starting in San José de los Llanos, the path leads through pine forests and across black lava fields formed by the 1909 eruption of Chinyero — the most recent volcanic eruption on the island.
You’ll walk along well-marked trails (PR-TF 43.1 and 43.2), gaining altitude from 1,108 to 1,391 m. The route includes views of El Teide, Pico Viejo, and other nearby volcanoes like Montaña Negra and Trevejos, which caused the destruction of Garachico in 1706.
The terrain changes gradually — from shaded forest to open ash fields. At some points, you’ll see large lava flows and isolated rocks shaped by past eruptions. This trail offers both nature and geology in one walk.
The full loop from San José de los Llanos takes around 5 hours at a relaxed pace. It’s easy to follow thanks to white and yellow trail markers. Avoid walking off-trail — access to the cones of Chinyero and Montaña Negra is forbidden as the area is part of the Chinyero Special Nature Reserve.
