What to See in Candelaria - Tenerife

Candelaria is more than just a stop along Tenerife’s southeastern coast — it’s a place where faith, history, and identity come together. Known as the spiritual heart of the island, Candelaria is home to the Virgin of Candelaria (La Morenita), the patron saint of the Canary Islands. This makes it one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Tenerife.

According to legend, in 1392, two Guanche shepherds discovered a dark wooden statue of the Virgin inside a cave on the coast. That moment is still remembered every year in the Ceremonia Guanche, a symbolic reenactment held during the Fiesta de la Candelaria each August.

In this guide, you’ll find the best things to do in Candelaria, a self-guided walking route, and honest tips to make the most of your visit.

Nine bronze statues of the Guanche kings (Menceyes) stand along the seafront, facing the basilica. Each statue represents one of the island’s pre-Hispanic kingdoms, honoring the indigenous heritage of Tenerife before the Spanish conquest.

This is the most important pilgrimage site in the Canary Islands. The basilica faces the sea and dominates Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias, where both religious ceremonies and cultural events take place. The church is open daily and includes stunning murals and statues dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria.

This coastal cave is where the Guanches first kept the Virgin’s image. Today, it holds a replica of the statue (the original was lost in a storm) and remains an active site of devotion and pilgrimage.

This pottery museum celebrates traditional Guanche ceramic techniques. Visitors can see clay vessels used in daily life and enjoy live demonstrations by local artisans. It’s a quiet and enriching stop for those interested in Tenerife’s folk culture.

A unique open-air nativity village on display year-round. The miniature figures and buildings recreate Canarian architecture, daily rural life, and biblical scenes, blending history with local tradition.
