TENERIFE
WHERE TO STAY

North or South of Tenerife? Where to Stay?

Choosing where to stay in Tenerife can shape your whole trip.

The island is small, but each area feels different.
Some places are warmer and busier. Others are greener, quieter, and more local.

Instead of listing hotels, it helps to first understand the areas.

In this guide, we’ll show you the three main parts of Tenerife:

  • The south — good weather more realiable, beaches, more touristic

  • The north — nature, culture, and a slower pace

  • The metropolitan area — city life, food, and local atmosphere

There’s no single “best” place to stay.
It depends on what kind of trip you want.

Take a moment to explore each area — it will make planning the rest of your trip much easier.

FAQ

The south is warmer and more consistent for beach days. The north is greener, with more culture and hiking options.

Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Puerto de La Cruz and Santa Cruz are the easiest areas with good transport and walkable centers.

It depends on what kind of trip you’re planning.

If you want reliable weather, beach time, and easy access to restaurants and activities, the south is usually the safest choice. The area between Los Cristianos and Alcalá tends to have the most stable conditions throughout the year.

If your plan is to explore more of the island — nature, hikes, and local towns — the north is a better fit. Puerto de la Cruz is a good base, with a more local atmosphere and good connections to places like Anaga or Teide.

Look at places like Alcalá, Playa San Juan, or smaller towns in the north like Garachico or Punta Hidalgo.

They have a slower pace, fewer crowds, and still offer good access to the coast.

The north is the best base.

Puerto de la Cruz gives you easy access to places like Anaga, Teide, and the green valleys around La Orotava. It’s a good balance between comfort and proximity to nature.

If you want to be closer to Anaga, you can also stay in Santa Cruz or San Andrés. From here, you’re just a short drive from some of the island’s most scenic hikes.

Compared to staying in the south, you’ll spend less time driving to nature.

The south is usually the easiest choice.

Beaches are more accessible, water is calmer, and there are more facilities nearby.

Areas like Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos work well.
