IS TENERIFE CHEAP?

2026 TENERIFE COSTS GUIDE

Is Tenerife cheap or expensive? The answer depends on where you stay and how you travel. Tenerife isn’t one-price-fits-all. A week can feel cheap if you base yourself in the north, or it can cost double in the south.

This guide shows what to expect for accommodation, food, transport, and activities in both north and south Tenerife, plus examples of what a week can cost for different types of travelers.

Budget Week

North: €400–600
South: €700–1,000

Mid-range Week

North: €800–1,100
South: €1,200–1,600

Comfort Week

North: €1,500–2,500
South: €2,500–4,000+

Acommodation and Food

North of Tenerife | Local, Cheaper, Authentic

Staying in Santa Cruz, La Laguna, Puerto de la Cruz or means more locals and fewer resorts. Prices are lower, and the food scene leans towards traditional Canarian.

  • Hotels & rentals: €40–100 per night in low/mid-range places. Boutique hotels in Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz often sit at €80–120.

  • Meals: Menu del día (starter, main, dessert, drink) for €10–15. Sit-down dinner in a local restaurant for €20–25 per person.

  • Coffee & beer: Espresso around €1–1.50; beer €1.50–2.50 in normal bars.

If you like authentic towns, local markets, and saving money, the north is ideal.

South Tenerife | Resorts, Beaches, Higher Prices

The south is built around tourism: Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos. Comfort is high, but so are the prices.

  • Hotels & rentals: €120–400 per night for mid- to high-range hotels. 5★ resorts or private villas start at €400–500 per night.

  • Meals: €20–40 per person in tourist restaurants; cocktails €7–10. Buffets and all-inclusive deals are common but not always cheap.

  • Coffee & beer: Coffee €2.50–3; beer €3–4 on the promenade.

Best for travelers who want beach access, international menus, and everything close at hand.

Transport (Island Wide)

Transport costs don’t vary much between north and south.

  • Car rental: €20–30 per day in low season; €60–100+ in high season. Consider renting for a couple of days if you want to explore more remote areas. Find here some good deals.
  • Buses (TITSA): €1.50–2.50 for short rides; €3–15 for intercity. The network is well-connected and reaches most towns and natural parks. You can find more information here.

  • Taxis: €25–35 for airport transfers to nearby towns.
  • Campervans: Can be a budget-friendly choice since accommodation and cooking are included. Tenerife has official campervan spots where overnight stays are allowed.

For many trips, buses are enough — they even reach places like Teide National Park and Anaga. If you want to go more off-grid or move at your own pace, a short car rental or campervan can be worth it.

Activities (Island Wide)

The good news: some of the best experiences in Tenerife don’t cost anything.

  • Free: beaches, ocean pools, hikes in Teide, Anaga or Teno, coastal walks, viewpoints, historic towns.

  • Teide cable car: from €23.50 one-way (dynamic pricing for returns). To hike the summit, you’ll need a free permit booked in advance. If you’re looking for a tour with cable car, find information here.

  • Boat trips: €25–60 depending on type and length.

  • Local fiestas & traditions: Tenerife has many local parties and celebrations. They’re often free to join, but visitors should respect traditions. In some cases, wearing traditional dress is part of the event. See our Festivals & Traditions page for details.

  • Other experiences: surfing lessons, scuba diving, kayaking, paragliding, wine tasting — prices vary. Hiking, swimming, and exploring towns are always free options.

In Tenerife, north vs. south is the real price divide.

  • North: more local, authentic, and affordable — a smart choice for budget and mid-range travelers.

  • South: built for comfort, international visitors, and full services — but at a higher price.

Transport and activities cost about the same across the island, so your choice of base — together with the weather — will have the biggest impact on your trip.

The north can be cooler and cloudier, while the south is sunnier and drier. We explain this in detail in our Weather in Tenerife guide.

No matter which side you pick, Tenerife can be both affordable and comfortable — it all depends on how you plan it.
